App store rank tracking
Rank tracking records where your app appears in App Store and Google Play search results for a given keyword, country and device, sampled on a schedule. Every provider's numbers differ slightly because rankings are personalized and sampled rather than published, so the useful signal is the trend and the relative gap to competitors, not any single day's position. appXL tracks positions alongside the metadata and creative changes that caused them, so a movement can be attributed to something you did rather than left as an unexplained line on a chart.
What it does
Positions with causes attached
Every tracked keyword is annotated with your metadata history, so a rise or fall lines up against the change that plausibly caused it.
Multi-market coverage
Tracks each storefront you publish in separately, because a term that ranks in the US frequently ranks nowhere in the UK or Germany.
Competitor share of search
Measures how much of your tracked keyword set your competitors occupy, which is a steadier signal than your own absolute positions.
Regression alerts
Flags meaningful drops rather than daily wobble, using a threshold tuned to how volatile your category actually is.
What the agent handles for you
- Adds newly winnable keywords to the tracked set automatically.
- Separates real ranking regressions from sampling noise.
- Attributes movement to your last metadata or creative change.
- Drafts a corrective metadata change when coverage is lost.
Why every tool shows a different rank
Neither Apple nor Google publishes a ranking API. Every tracker infers position by running searches from sampled devices and locations, then reconciling the results. Different sampling means different answers, and none of them is definitively correct.
This matters practically: do not switch tools mid-quarter and read the difference as a performance change, and do not report daily positions to stakeholders as though they were measurements.
What is worth tracking
- Your primary term, and the two or three terms your title and subtitle actually commit to.
- The branded terms of your closest competitors, as an early warning of their marketing pushes.
- Every term you changed metadata to target in the last release, so the change can be judged.
- Category and top-chart position, which reflect download velocity rather than metadata.
The metrics that sit around rank
| Metric | Answers | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword position | Are we visible for this term? | Sampled store searches |
| Impressions | Is that visibility worth anything? | App Store Connect / Play Console |
| Conversion rate | Does the listing convert the visibility? | Store console |
| Share of search | Are we gaining or losing against rivals? | Tracked set across competitors |
Frequently asked questions
How often should rankings be checked?
Daily sampling with weekly interpretation. Checking daily gives a clean trend line; reacting daily means reacting to sampling noise.
Is rank tracking still useful if impressions are flat?
Yes, as a diagnostic. Flat impressions with rising ranks usually means you are winning terms nobody searches, which tells you the keyword selection is wrong rather than the metadata.
Can rankings be tracked per country?
They have to be. Rankings are storefront-specific, so a term is tracked separately for each market you publish in.
